Director of Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava Removes Controversial Dance Scene After Meeting Raj Thackeray

January 27, 2025: Laxman Utekar, the director of the upcoming historical drama Chhaava, has confirmed the removal of a controversial dance sequence involving Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai. The decision follows a meeting with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, who had raised concerns about the depiction.

In an official statement, Utekar emphasized the importance of preserving the legacy of Sambhaji Maharaj, the Maratha king portrayed by Vicky Kaushal. "It was just a matter of a dance sequence, and nothing is bigger than the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj," he said.

The sequence in question featured a Lezim dance, a traditional Maratha folk performance, involving Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, who plays Maharani Yesubai. While the dance was envisioned to reflect Maratha culture, Utekar clarified, "Lezim dance is not bigger than Sambhaji Maharaj. If anyone is hurt by it, we will remove the scene."

Based on Shivaji Sawant’s acclaimed book Chhava, the film recounts the life and reign of Sambhaji Maharaj, highlighting his valor and leadership. Utekar explained that the dance sequence stemmed from imagining Sambhaji as a vibrant 20-year-old warrior participating in cultural traditions.

Amid escalating objections from Maharashtra ministers, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the filmmakers were urged to ensure historical accuracy. The Chief Minister stated, "Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s history should be portrayed correctly. Creativity in filmmaking should come with sensitivity."

Responding to these concerns, Utekar announced a special premiere on January 29 for historians and experts to review the film before its release. "We respect the guidance of historians and want to ensure the film reflects Sambhaji Maharaj's legacy accurately," he said.

The controversy had sparked threats of a statewide ban if the dance sequence was not removed, adding pressure on the filmmakers. However, Utekar reassured audiences that Chhaava would release as planned on February 14, starring an ensemble cast including Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, Diana Penty, and Divya Dutta.

The film's trailer, unveiled last week, has already generated significant buzz, promising a heartfelt tribute to one of Maharashtra's most revered historical figures.
