Imphal: A devastating blaze at the Shimreishang-Maitonphi Park museum in Ukhrul district, Manipur, has reportedly destroyed the entire collection of Naga folk tale sculptures, including the iconic engraved sculptures of legendary lovers 'Ashang and Aton'.

The fire, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, was sparked by a wildfire that spread rapidly due to strong winds.

According to Rathing Horam, Convener of the Yangreiram Beautification Society (YBS), the museum was a treasure trove of Tangkhul Naga culture and heritage.

The sculptures of Ashang and Aton, installed in 2018, were a beloved representation of an immortal love story that is deeply revered by the Tangkhul people.

The loss of the museum and its priceless artifacts has been described as a "big loss for society and the nation" by Horam.

The museum was not only a cultural hub but also an educational resource for the local community. Rebuilding the museum and recreating the lost sculptures will be a long and challenging process, administration officials said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has revealed that it was accidentally sparked by YBS members who were clearing and burning trash in the park.

The strong winds spread the fire rapidly, engulfing the traditional mini-museum and destroying its precious contents.
