Guwahati: An accident was reported from the Kharikhana area of Lanka in Hojai, Assam when a speeding sand-laden tipper truck struck and killed a 60-year-old cyclist.

The deceased was identified as Alim Uddin Majumdar.

The accident happened when the tipper truck hit the cyclist from behind and fled the scene.

The victim succumbed to his injuries on the spot before any medical assistance could arrive.

This incident sparked widespread outrage among locals, who have been complaining about the reckless driving of sand-filled trucks and dumpers in the area.

They claimed that the truck that hit Majumdar was speeding and was being driven recklessly.

For several days, hundreds of sand-filled vehicles have been crossing the Mathauri road connecting Kharikhana to Kapilipar, posing a significant threat to the safety of pedestrians and other road users.

Despite repeated appeals to the officials, the locals have been unable to stop the sand trucks from racing through the area.

The situation took a tense turn when the police arrived at the scene, and the local people protested, blocking the ambulance carrying the victim's body for an extended period.

The police eventually managed to control the situation with the help of local village volunteers.
