Guwahati: A brutality incident has come to light in Assam's Dibrugarh district, where a 62-year-old woman was allegedly tortured and abandoned near a river by a group of people over witchcraft allegations.
The victim was accused of practising witchcraft by the locals.
According to reports, the incident occurred at 1 No Rajgarh in Romai tea estate under Lahowal police station, where the woman Niranjana Sanga (name changed) resides.
Her husband alleged that a group of people, led by Suraj Sanga, Suraj Moni, and Narju Sanga, stormed into their house, assaulted him, and dragged his wife outside, brutally torturing her before abandoning her near the river.
Reports claimed that the woman was thrown into the river.
The victim's husband stated that the attackers accused his wife of practising witchcraft, claiming that she was responsible for the illness of others in the community.
He denied these allegations, saying that the attack was unwarranted and motivated by family rivalry.
The police found the woman in critical condition near the river and rushed her to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for treatment.
Dibrugarh Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Nirmal Ghosh said that the incident is under investigation, but attributed it to family rivalry.
Further investigation into the incident is being carried out.
