February 7, 2025: A fire broke out today in Sector 18 of the Maha Kumbh Nagar in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, causing panic among devotees. Multiple fire engines were rushed to the scene, and the blaze was quickly brought under control. No casualties have been reported.
According to officials, the fire erupted near Tulsi Chauraha on Old GT Road, affecting a camp in the area. "Firefighters responded swiftly and managed to douse the flames," said Inspector Yogesh Chaturvedi of Khak Chowk police station, as quoted by PTI.
This incident comes amid the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. So far, the Uttar Pradesh government reports that over 397.4 million pilgrims have taken a holy dip at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participated in the ritual.
This is the second fire-related incident at the Maha Kumbh in recent weeks. A week ago, 15 tents caught fire in Prayagraj’s Chatnag Ghat area. While no casualties were reported, authorities later determined that the affected tents were unauthorized structures.
Apart from fire incidents, the Kumbh Mela also witnessed a tragic stampede on January 29, which left 30 people dead and 60 others injured. In response, the Uttar Pradesh government announced a ₹25 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and ordered a judicial inquiry.
The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13, will continue until February 26. The next major bathing dates are Maghi Purnima on February 12 and Maha Shivaratri on February 26.
Authorities have urged attendees to remain cautious and follow safety protocols to prevent further incidents.
