Fashion Show in Gulmarg During Ramzan Sparks Outrage, CM Orders Probe

March 10, 2025: A fashion show held at the scenic ski resort of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir has ignited a major controversy, with several political leaders and social media users condemning the event as "obscene" for taking place during the holy month of Ramzan.

The event, organized by renowned fashion designers Shivan and Narresh in collaboration with Elle India, showcased models walking down a snow-covered ramp in winter-themed ensembles, including bikinis and capes. A video of the event posted on social media quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from various quarters.

Reacting to the uproar, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah acknowledged the public sentiment, calling the outrage "totally understandable." He has directed the local authorities to submit a report within 24 hours, after which appropriate action will be taken.

“The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities and that too during this holy month. My office has been in touch with the local authorities, and I’ve asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours,” Abdullah stated on X.

The fashion show has also drawn criticism from Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who termed it "outrageous" and demanded accountability from those responsible.

"How could such an event be tolerated in the Valley, known for its Sufi and saint culture? Those involved should be immediately held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in Kashmir," he said.

Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference chief Sajad Lone, while maintaining a liberal stance, also questioned the timing of the event. "I consider myself to be a person of liberal orientation, but this was not the best time to host such an event," he remarked.

With tensions running high, the government’s response and the findings of the official report will likely determine the next course of action regarding the controversial event.
