March 4, 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured residents of the six remaining disputed areas along the Meghalaya-Assam border that their safety remains a top priority for the government. Addressing concerns in the Assembly on Tuesday, he urged villagers to stay alert and assured them of direct access to him in case of any security concerns.
During the session, UDP legislator Mayral Born Syiem from Nongpoh raised a motion highlighting the challenges faced by people living in the border areas. In response, Sangma emphasized that his government is committed to ensuring the protection of its citizens. He stated that any issue arising in the border villages would be dealt with immediately and that he personally remains accessible for any urgent matters.
Recognizing the persistent tensions in the disputed areas, Sangma reassured that the administration would take swift action whenever required. He reaffirmed that the government would continue working towards ensuring the safety and stability of people living in these regions.
Highlighting progress made in resolving the long-standing border dispute, Sangma mentioned that a Memorandum of Understanding had already settled six areas of contention. He cited the Tarabari sector as an example, where Assam withdrew its claim after villagers expressed their preference to remain with Meghalaya.
With his assurance of continued efforts to resolve border tensions, the Chief Minister’s statement aims to instill confidence among the affected residents while reaffirming the government’s dedication to their security and well-being.
