Guwahati: After securing bail in two cases, senior journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumder was finally released from the Guwahati Central Jail on Saturday.
Mozumder, the chief reporter of a digital news outlet was initially arrested on March 25 while covering protests related to an alleged multi-crore scam at Apex Bank.
The journalist's arrest and subsequent rearrest sparked widespread criticism, with many alleging that the government was targeting journalists reporting on corruption. The Press Club of India (PCI) sharply criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for attempting to define who qualifies as a "legitimate" journalist.
Mozumder's release comes after the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court of Kamrup Metropolitan District granted him bail in his second case. He was produced in court on Friday and released on a bond.
