Violence Erupts During Manipur Lok Sabha Elections, Ensuring Voter Safety Imperative

April 19, 2024: Reports emerged of shooting by miscreants at a polling station in Thamanpokpi under the Moirang Assembly segment, leaving three people injured. This unfortunate incident has highlighted the critical need for enhanced security measures to safeguard the democratic process and ensure the safety of voters.

Despite stringent security arrangements put in place by authorities, the outbreak of violence underscores the persistent challenges faced in regions affected by ethnic tensions. Manipur, with its complex socio-political landscape, has often been susceptible to such incidents, making it imperative for authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in maintaining peace and order during elections.

The voter turnout figures reflect the impact of the violence on the electoral process. By 9 a.m. on polling day, only 12.6% of the over 15.44 lakh eligible voters had cast their ballots for the two Lok Sabha seats in Manipur. Inner Manipur constituency recorded a turnout of 13.82%, while the turnout in Outer Manipur stood at 11.57% in the first two hours of voting. These numbers underscore the potential deterrent effect of violence on voter participation and the overall democratic exercise. In response to the incident, authorities swiftly reinforced security measures in the affected area, aiming to restore calm and ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. However, the occurrence of such violence raises broader concerns about the underlying factors contributing to electoral unrest in the region.

Addressing these root causes, including socio-economic disparities, political marginalization, and ethnic tensions, is crucial for fostering a conducive environment for free and fair elections. Furthermore, efforts to promote dialogue, inclusivity, and community engagement are essential in building trust and mitigating conflicts that threaten the electoral process. Civil society organizations, political leaders, and local stakeholders play a vital role in fostering a culture of peace and tolerance, thereby safeguarding the democratic rights of all citizens.  As the electoral process progresses, it is incumbent upon authorities to prioritize the safety and security of voters.
