March 6, 2025: The Meghalaya government has allocated Rs 1,900 crore for sports infrastructure development and hosting the 39th National Games in 2027.

Meghalaya will host the National Games despite interest from larger states like Chhattisgarh and Assam, reports stated.

Sources stated that the state's preparedness was the key factor in securing the hosting rights.

The largest component of the Rs 1,900-crore investment will go towards providing access to sports infrastructure.

Construction of the Rs 732 crore Mawkhanu Football Complex, a 40,000-capacity dedicated football stadium, will commence in the next financial year.

Additionally, 25 new artificial turfs and 140 grassroots centers will be developed to promote sports at the grassroots level. Rs 10 crore has been allocated for the CM's Football Mission, which aims to promote football in the state.

Furthermore, Rs 236 crore has been allocated for completing ongoing projects, including the JN Stadium, PA Sangma Sports Complex, Ampati Stadium, and Jongksha Indoor Stadium. The Meghalaya Outstanding Sportspersons Direct Appointment Policy will guarantee jobs for athletes winning medals at national and international levels in International Olympics Committee-recognized sports.
