Shillong: The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) has criticized Meghalaya's political leaders for neglecting the interests of the Khasi indigenous community, prompting the union to take charge of defending their rights since 1979.

KSU General Secretary Donald V Thabah emphasized the union's commitment to safeguarding the rights of indigenous tribes, particularly on issues like land alienation, safety, and demographic balance.

He also highlighted KSU's efforts in combating illegal immigration and influx in the state.

Thabah noted that the union has expanded its focus to address socially relevant issues, such as providing relief during natural disasters. The KSU has consistently prioritized education, recognizing its significance in the development of indigenous people across various disciplines.

The union has established units within and outside Meghalaya, including in Manipur, Assam, and Mizoram. Thabah revealed that KSU members in Delhi and Bengaluru have assisted locals from Meghalaya who work in these cities, often falling victim to false employment promises.
