December 28, 2024: The nation bids a solemn farewell to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, whose last rites will be performed today at 11:45 a.m. at the Nigambodh Ghat crematorium in Delhi. The Union Home Ministry confirmed on Friday that a state funeral would be accorded to the revered leader, who passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday night at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Dr. Singh, India’s 13th prime minister and the first Sikh to hold the office, led the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government from May 2004 to May 2014, steering the country through a decade of significant economic and political changes.
The AIIMS medical team reported that Dr. Singh was brought to the Medical Emergency unit at 8:06 p.m. on Thursday but, despite their best efforts, could not be revived. He was declared dead at 9:51 p.m., leaving a void in Indian politics.
The Union Home Ministry, in its statement, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and confirmed the arrangements for the state funeral, underscoring the profound respect and recognition for Dr. Singh’s contributions to the nation.
Having retired from public life following the Congress' defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Dr. Singh made his last public appearance in the Rajya Sabha in August 2023. Throughout his career, he was lauded for his economic acumen and dignified leadership, which left an indelible mark on the nation's history.
Political leaders, dignitaries, and citizens are expected to gather today to pay their respects to the leader, who leaves behind a legacy of integrity, intellect, and statesmanship.
