Elon Musk chooses Mumbai for its first showroom in India

March 6, 2025: After PM Modi’s meeting with Elon Musk in his recent US trip, Elon Musk has chosen two locations in India- Delhi and Mumbai, to enter the Indian market. The maiden one will be in Mumbai, the company plans to sell imported EV in India. However, the high auto tariff is an issue that the Tesla owner is criticizing. India imposes more than 100 per cent tariff on automobiles from the US. Elon is also backed by president Trump who recently talked about reciprocal tariff.

Tesla has secured a 5 year lease that has started in Feb 16 of the current year, for a 4003 square-foot showroom space (around 372 sq meters) and will pay around 3.88 crores in rent for the first year. The rent will increase by 5% every year.

The Mumbai showroom will be situated in the Maker Maxity Building in the Business and retail hub of Bandra Kurla Complex near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

However, Sajjan Jindal, Chairman of JSW group, who also makes EV, said Tesla can’t overpower Tata and Mahindra because he said being successful in India isn’t an easy job.
