December 26, 2024: Dense fog blanketed parts of Delhi on Thursday morning, causing disruptions at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, which implemented low-visibility procedures as a precaution. Despite the fog, flights at the airport were reported to be operating on schedule.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a minimum temperature of 7°C in the city, signaling a continuation of the ongoing cold wave. The department also predicted that dense fog would persist in the late-night and early morning hours through December 26 and 28, making visibility challenging in several areas.
The dense fog, coupled with a 'very poor' Air Quality Index (AQI), created hazardous conditions across the city. Commuters were advised to take extra precautions while traveling due to limited visibility and the thick smog. The overall air quality in Delhi has remained at dangerous levels, posing health risks to residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions.
In addition to the fog, 18 trains were delayed due to the low-visibility conditions, which further disrupted the daily commute for thousands of passengers. Travelers are advised to check the status of their trains before heading to the stations.
The IMD forecasted partly cloudy skies for the day, with a possibility of very light to light rain in the evening or night. It also predicted smog and moderate fog in most parts of Delhi during the morning hours, with dense fog in isolated locations.
Surface winds are expected to blow from the northeast direction at speeds of less than 4 km/h, adding to the persistent cold and foggy conditions.
As Delhi grapples with the ongoing weather challenges, the IMD has urged residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions, especially during early morning hours when fog is expected to be at its densest.
