Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to resign today; AAP to announce new CM’s name

September 17, 2024: In a significant political move, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is set to resign today. He will meet Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at 4:30 PM to formally submit his resignation. This announcement comes in the wake of his recent release from Tihar Jail and a series of internal discussions within his party about his successor.

Kejriwal revealed his decision to step down on Sunday during a meeting with party workers. He stated that he would vacate the chief minister’s chair until his honesty is validated by the public, expressing his intention to face a “test of fire” following his bail from the Supreme Court. The bail was granted in connection with an alleged corruption case involving Delhi’s excise policy, filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been actively exploring options for Kejriwal’s replacement. Key party meetings have been held to identify and finalize a new chief minister. Among the potential successors being discussed are senior AAP leaders such as Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Kailash Gahlot, Gopal Rai, and Imran Hussain.

There is also speculation that the party might consider appointing a Dalit leader to the role, though no specific names have been mentioned yet. The current term of the Delhi Assembly is set to expire on February 11, 2025.
