Chaos at New Delhi Railway Station: 18 Dead, Including 11 Women and 5 Children, in Maha Kumbh Rush

February 16, 2025: A tragic incident unfolded at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night, claiming the lives of at least 18 people, including 11 women and five children, due to overcrowding caused by delayed Maha Kumbh special trains.

The chief casualty medical officer of LNJP Hospital confirmed the deaths of 10 women, three children, and two men, while three more fatalities were reported at Lady Hardinge Hospital. Officials have launched an inquiry into the incident. The Railways has announced financial assistance of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased, ₹2.5 lakh for those severely injured, and ₹1 lakh for those with minor injuries.

Among the victims, nine were from Bihar, eight from Delhi, and one from Haryana. Authorities have arranged for railway personnel to accompany bereaved families returning to their hometowns.

The overcrowding began around 8 PM on platform numbers 14 and 15, where passengers were waiting for trains to Prayagraj. The situation escalated rapidly, prompting emergency measures. Four fire engines were dispatched, and additional security forces were deployed to manage the crisis.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed their condolences. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured that the situation is now under control. “Delhi Police and RPF have responded swiftly. The injured have been taken to hospitals, and special trains are being run to manage the sudden rush,” he posted on X.

Railway authorities have urged the public not to believe rumours of a stampede, emphasizing that efforts are underway to ensure passenger safety and prevent further chaos.
