February 19, 2025: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to name Delhi’s new Chief Minister today, marking the party’s first leadership in the national capital in nearly three decades. The much-anticipated announcement is expected by this evening, sources confirm.
The selection process will commence at noon, when the BJP's Parliamentary Board, the party’s highest decision-making body, will meet to appoint 'observers' for the gathering of newly-elected MLAs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on an official trip to France and the United States, is expected to attend this key meeting at the BJP headquarters in Delhi.
Following this, BJP legislators will convene at 6:15 PM to elect their leader, who will assume the role of Chief Minister. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at 11 AM at Ramlila Maidan, a historic venue for political events in the city. According to sources, the oath will be taken precisely at 12:05 PM, and the ceremony will conclude by 12:34 PM.
To accommodate the dignitaries and guests, three separate stages will be set up at the event. One stage will be reserved for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, and the newly appointed Chief Minister. Another will host invited religious leaders, while a third will accommodate over 200 BJP and allied MPs and MLAs attending the function.
With the BJP forming a government in Delhi after nearly three decades, today’s decision is poised to shape the city’s political landscape for the years to come.
