Adani Bribery Case: US Court Orders Joint Trial in Criminal and Civil Proceedings

January 3, 2025: A New York court has ordered the consolidation of three ongoing cases against Indian industrialist Gautam Adani and his associates into a single joint trial. This significant ruling, announced on January 3, 2025, is in relation to allegations of a $265 million bribery scheme. The cases, which include both criminal and civil proceedings, will now be heard together to ensure judicial efficiency and avoid conflicting schedules.

The court determined that the charges stem from similar allegations and transactions, making the consolidation necessary. District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis, who is already overseeing the criminal case against Adani, will be responsible for the joint trial. The cases include the criminal case US vs. Adani and others, the civil case Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) vs. Adani and others, and another civil case SEC vs. Cabanes, which involves one of the other accused individuals.

The accusations against Adani and his associates involve the payment of $265 million in bribes to secure contracts for solar energy projects with state electricity distribution companies. US prosecutors have alleged that these bribes were hidden from US banks and investors who were involved in financing the projects.

In response to the allegations, the Adani Group has denied the charges, calling them "baseless" and reaffirming their compliance with all applicable laws. A spokesperson for the company emphasized that the indictment is based on allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

With the consolidation of these cases, the court staff has been instructed to reassign them to Judge Garaufis, who will oversee the entire process. The trial's outcome is expected to have significant legal and financial consequences for the Adani Group and could influence the future of its international business operations.
