Naba Sarania Accuses Promod Boro, UPPL of Blocking Sarania Kachari Recognition

March 11, 2025: Former MP Naba Sarania has alleged that Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief Executive Member Promod Boro and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) are deliberately obstructing the recognition of the Sarania Kachari community as Kacharis. Addressing a press conference, Sarania asserted that the Assam government should have resolved the community’s long-standing issues during the budget session.

Sarania pointed out that while a government notification had granted the Sarania Kacharis the status of Kachari, they have yet to receive official certificates. This delay, he claimed, has significantly affected their job prospects. "Without a certificate, our children struggle to secure jobs. Even when they apply under reserved categories, they require the Deputy Commissioner’s approval, but the DC refuses to sign," he alleged.

The former MP emphasized that the Sarania Kacharis are unquestionably part of the larger Kachari community, but an administrative error in the past has left them in a state of uncertainty. "This historical mistake must be rectified, and certificates should be issued to the Sarania Kacharis without further delay," he demanded.

Taking a political stance, Sarania accused Promod Boro and the ruling UPPL of intentionally stalling the process for political reasons. "Promod Boro and UPPL are preventing the Sarania Kacharis from being recognized as Kacharis for their own political interests," he asserted.

Further, Sarania expressed his willingness to step aside if his political career posed an obstacle to the community’s welfare. "If my presence becomes a problem for my people, I will not contest from any tribal seat in future elections," he declared.

In response to remarks made by Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council leader Tankeshwar Rabha, Sarania dismissed them as baseless. "Tankeshwar Rabha’s comments about me make no sense. He only speaks this way because he is in power. If he were not in power, he would be in the same position as I am," he remarked.

Sarania’s statements have reignited the debate on the recognition and rights of the Sarania Kachari community, setting the stage for a larger political showdown in Assam ahead of the elections.
