March 14, 2025: In a major initiative to assist bereaved families, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched a free hearse service for the people of the city. The service, named Muktirath, was officially inaugurated on Thursday by Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania.
The initiative received a boost with the donation of a new hearse vehicle to GMC by Delta Publicity. To expand this essential service, GMC plans to introduce six more free hearse services by April and May. The objective is to ensure that each of the six divisions of Guwahati has access to a dedicated free hearse vehicle.
The GMC Muktirath service will operate daily from 6 AM to 10 PM, providing free transportation of deceased individuals for last rites. Families in need can call 8811007000 to avail of the service.
Meanwhile, GMC has issued a strict warning against lessees who collect fees for services while using GMC receipts. The corporation clarified that during the tender process, advance payments are collected from lessees for a period of six months to a year. However, GMC does not issue any official receipts to lessees, and any misuse will face legal action.
With this initiative, GMC aims to provide dignified and accessible funeral transportation for the underprivileged while ensuring transparency in service operations.
