Assam Police File FIR Against Pakistani National Allegedly Linked to Gaurav Gogoi’s Wife Over Security Concerns

February 17, 2025: The Assam Police have filed a first information report (FIR) against Pakistani national Ali Tauqueer Sheikh and several unidentified individuals for alleged involvement in anti-India activities. The FIR follows a directive from the state Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, issued on Sunday. The investigation will explore whether Sheikh's alleged ties to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's wife, Elizabeth Clare Gogoi, a British citizen, pose a threat to India’s national security and sovereignty.

Sarma has expressed concerns regarding Sheikh's association with Elizabeth Gogoi, alleging that she was an integral part of Lead Pakistan, an organization founded by Sheikh that focuses on climate change. Additionally, both Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi were reportedly part of the global climate action group, the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), which operates in both India and Pakistan.

In response to the accusations, Gaurav Gogoi has vehemently denied the claims, calling them part of a "slanderous campaign." He emphasized that appropriate legal action would be taken against those responsible for spreading these allegations.

The FIR, lodged by the Assam Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID), accuses Sheikh of multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P) Act). These charges include abetting acts that could constitute an offence, endangering India’s sovereignty, unity, and integrity, criminal conspiracy, and unlawful activities.

In a statement on social media, Sarma confirmed that the Assam Cabinet’s decision to pursue the investigation reflects the seriousness of the issue, noting Assam's historical concerns about the involvement of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the region.

Sarma also called on Elizabeth Gogoi, as a British citizen, to cooperate fully with the investigation and provide relevant documents, including her passport, visa, and travel history. He further urged Gaurav Gogoi to assist the police, should they seek his statement, particularly concerning his parliamentary questions related to India’s nuclear capabilities.

As the investigation progresses, the Assam government has expressed its commitment to ensuring that any potential national security threats are addressed with the utmost urgency and diligence.
