Myanmar earthquake equivalent to 300 atomic bombs, death toll at 1600

Guwahati: The catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025, releasing energy equivalent to more than 334 atomic bombs.

The devastating quake, the strongest to hit Myanmar in a century, has claimed the lives of over 1,600 people, with hundreds more injured and missing.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located near Mandalay and was followed by over a dozen aftershocks, including a powerful 6.7 magnitude tremor. The quake also caused casualties in neighbouring Thailand, where 17 people lost their lives in Bangkok, including a 30-storey under-construction skyscraper that collapsed.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams racing against time to find any survivors in the ravaged regions. The international community is providing support and aid to those affected by the disaster.
