March 28, 2025: After the powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck Myanmar at 11:50 IST, it was followed by four aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 7.0 that hits just 10 minutes later.
The epicentres of the first two aftershocks with magnitudes 7.0 and 5 respectively, were located in Myanmar, with the third one striking the East Garo Hills in Meghalaya at 13:03 IST with magnitude 4. The fourth aftershock hit Myanmar again at 13:07 IST with magnitude 4.9.
The earthquake and its aftershocks have resulted in significant damage to residential buildings in Mandalay, with a mosque collapsing and taking the lives of 10 people who were praying. The old bridge over Irrawaddy River has also been destroyed.
According to reports, at least 20 people have lost their lives, with many more injured. A 1000 bed hospital in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw is reportedly a “mass casualty area”.
The earthquake was felt across the region, with tremors reported in India, Thailand and Vietnam. In Bangkok, a state of emergency has been declared.
Myanmar has also declared a state of emergency, with the country’s authorities working to provide assistance to those in need.
Indian PM Narendra Modi has expressed his readiness to provide all possible assistance to Myanmar and Thailand.
