Guwahati: The Basistha and Dispur Police teams arrested five individuals from the Beltola Bazar in Guwahati, Assam for allegedly collecting illegal tax from the vendors.
The police raided the Beltola Market, Guwahati, based on allegations of harassment and extortion of retail vegetable sellers and vendors by the Beltola Bazar Market Committee.
Five individuals, identified as Sandan Barman, Biraj Das, Tapan Deka, Nayanjyoti Das, and Anish Mech, were apprehended during the operation. The police recovered a total of Rs 1,07,540 in cash, seven mobile phones, 14 tampered receipts in the name of Guwahati Metropolitan Corporation and other "incriminating" documents.
The accused were allegedly collecting money using fake receipts, causing financial hardship to the vendors.
Further investigation is underway.
