March 19, 2025: Karnataka JDS MLA MT Krishnappa has sparked controversy with his proposal to provide two free liquor bottles per week to men, while also criticizing the Congress-led government’s initiative to give Rs 2,000 per month to women. Krishnappa argued that the Government’s welfare schemes including free bus travel and electricity are financially burdensome, and instead suggested providing free liquor to men through societies.

The proposal was met with strong opposition from Congress leaders, including Energy Minister KJ George, who dismissed the idea, saying, “You win the election, form the government, and do this. We are trying to make people drink less.”

Krishnappa’s comments were seen as a sharp attack on the Congress Government’s welfare initiatives, which has been a subject of debate in the state. The proposal has sparked a row, with many criticizing the MLA’s suggestion as regressive.
