March 31, 2025: Thousands of Muslims took to the streets in protest against the Waqf Amendment Bill after offering Eid prayers, including Hailakandi in Assam. The protest was part of a nationwide movement against the bill, which has been criticized by Muslim bodies and opposition parties.

The protesters demanded the withdrawal of the bill, which they claim interferes with their religious rights and practices. The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024 aims to streamline waqf management, address inheritance issues, and rename the Waqf Act, 1995. However, Muslim leaders and organizations have raised concerns that the bill undermines their autonomy and authority over Waqf properties.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has called for a nationwide protest against the bill, which has been supported by various Muslim organizations and parties including the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen  (AIMIM).

The protests highlight the growing concerns among Muslims about the govt’s intentions and potential impact of the bill on their community.
