Sherman Ali Ahmed Likely to Face Disqualification from Assam Assembly

March 28, 2025: Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed finds himself in deep political trouble as he faces serious allegations that may lead to his disqualification from the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The controversy erupted after Ahmed allegedly undermined the dignity of the Speaker’s chair during the recently concluded Budget Session. It has been reported that on the last day of the session, when the Deputy Speaker was presiding over the Assembly, Ahmed referred to him as "hopeless." Furthermore, he continued his criticism outside the House, which has been deemed an unpardonable offense under Article 304 of the Assembly’s procedural rules.

Adding to his woes, Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary himself has brought charges against Ahmed, further escalating the seriousness of the matter. The Speaker has also directed the members of the Privileges Committee to convene a meeting on April 1 to discuss the issue and take necessary action.

With the allegations mounting, Ahmed's legislative membership appears to be at risk, and his potential disqualification now seems almost certain. The upcoming Privileges Committee meeting is expected to play a decisive role in determining his political fate.

This development has sparked political debates across Assam, with many awaiting the committee’s final decision. If found guilty, Ahmed’s removal from the Assembly could set a strong precedent for maintaining decorum and discipline in the House.
