Guwahati: The Press Club of India (PCI) has expressed shock and outrage over the re-arrest of senior digital media journalist Dilawar Hussain Mozumder by the Assam Police on March 27 evening.

Mozumder was taken into custody immediately after being released on bail, in connection with a case of stealing important documents from a bank where he was covering a protest against an alleged recruitment scam.

The PCI has stood in solidarity with the Guwahati Press Club (GPC), which has demanded Mozumder's unconditional and immediate release. Mozumder serves as the assistant general secretary of the GPC. The PCI has also expressed support for the journalists who held a silent protest outside the Pan Bazar police station, where Mozumder was detained.

Furthermore, the PCI has condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's attempt to define who is a "legitimate" journalist. The PCI views this as an effort to divert attention from the core issue: preventing a journalist from performing their official duties, which is a serious infringement of the freedom of the press guaranteed under Article 19 (1) (A) of the Constitution.
