December 19, 2024: The parents of the trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this year have approached the Calcutta High Court, demanding a fresh investigation into the tragic incident. The victim's parents expressed a lack of confidence in the ongoing investigation and requested the court to direct a re-investigation into the rape and murder case.
The case, which has sparked widespread protests and public outcry in Kolkata, centers around the death of a postgraduate trainee doctor whose body was discovered in a seminar room at the hospital on August 9, 2024. The victim, a young medical professional, was allegedly attacked while she was resting in the seminar room during a break.
The prime suspect in the case, Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, has been accused of the brutal crime. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe after the initial investigation by local police drew criticism for procedural lapses. The CBI recently filed a charge sheet against Roy, claiming that he committed the crime while the victim was asleep in the hospital room.
However, the victim's parents are dissatisfied with the progress of the investigation and have called for a fresh inquiry into the matter. In response to their petition, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court instructed their lawyer to include the CBI as a party to the case. The matter is set to be heard again on Monday, December 23, 2024.
The incident had already sparked significant public outrage, leading to protests from medical students and professionals who demanded justice for the victim. Many have expressed concerns over the handling of the case, particularly the delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR) and potential lapses in the investigation process.
In a related development, on December 13, 2024, a Sealdah court granted bail to two key figures involved in the case: Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of the Tala police station. Both men were granted bail after the CBI failed to file charges against them within the 90-day statutory period. Ghosh is accused of tampering with evidence, while Mondal is alleged to have delayed the filing of the FIR after the victim's body was discovered.
Despite the setbacks in the case, the CBI has pressed forward with its investigation, focusing on the actions of Roy. In its charge sheet, the agency alleges that Roy's role as a civic volunteer with the local police facilitated his access to the hospital premises and allowed him to carry out the heinous crime with relative ease.
