December 19, 2024: The Indian Army has launched a new initiative in Ladakh, establishing a biodegradable sanitary napkin production facility in Martselang village as part of 'Operation Sadbhavana.' The facility aims to address menstrual hygiene challenges while promoting environmental sustainability in the regions of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The project is driven by local women, who play a central role in the production of high-quality, affordable, biodegradable, and UV-treated sanitary napkins. This initiative not only empowers women by creating economic opportunities but also raises awareness about menstrual hygiene in underserved areas of Ladakh.
Dr. Asif Hussain, Officer on Special Duty for Ladakh, visited the facility and praised the women for their crucial contribution to this transformative project. "Their involvement is a testament to the power of local communities in driving positive change," he said during his visit.
In addition to improving menstrual hygiene practices, the facility aims to reduce the environmental impact of conventional sanitary products. By offering eco-friendly alternatives, it contributes to the Army's broader sustainability goals while enhancing the dignity and well-being of women in the region.
The project is a collaboration between the Indian Army and the Vatsalya Foundation. The facility not only strengthens women's role in the workforce but also provides an important step toward raising awareness and access to sustainable, hygienic products for women in remote regions.
'Operation Sadbhavana,' launched in February 2023 by the Indian Army, has focused on a range of welfare activities in Ladakh, including education, infrastructure development, and now, menstrual hygiene. This initiative underscores the Army's commitment to the holistic development and empowerment of local communities in the region.
