October 16, 2024: In response to a spate of hoax bomb threats targeting airlines, the Indian government is taking decisive steps to bolster aviation security, including increasing the number of air marshals on flights.

Officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, and the Ministry of Home Affairs convened on Wednesday to address the recent threats, which have affected nearly a dozen Indian flights over the past three days, both domestically and internationally.

According to sources, discussions are underway to collaborate with law enforcement agencies in identifying hoax callers, with plans to update the "no-fly list" accordingly. This initiative aims to deter future threats and ensure passenger safety.

Furthermore, intelligence agencies have suggested a potential doubling of air marshals assigned to flights. Currently, a unit of National Security Guard (NSG) commandos serves as air marshals, primarily on international routes and select sensitive domestic flights. These armed plainclothes security officers play a crucial role in maintaining safety aboard passenger planes.

The increase in air marshals is part of a broader effort to enhance security measures in light of recent threats, as authorities seek to reassure the traveling public and prevent any disruption to air travel.
