Cabinet Committee on Security Approves Launch of 52 Surveillance Satellites

October 11, 2024: In a significant move to bolster national security, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for phase III of India's Space Based Surveillance (SBS) mission. This ambitious project aims to enhance land and maritime domain awareness for both civilian and military applications.

The CCS's approval involves the launch of at least 52 satellites, which will be deployed in low earth orbit and geostationary orbit. With a projected budget of ₹26,968 crore, the initiative will see the construction and launch of 21 satellites by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), while 31 will be developed by private companies.

The SBS mission, first initiated by the Vajpayee government in 2001, started with the launch of four satellites, including Cartosat and Risat series. Phase II followed in 2013 with six additional satellites. The newly approved SBS 3 is set to significantly expand India’s satellite capabilities over the next decade, providing dedicated surveillance support to the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

While official statements remain sparse, it is understood that this initiative aligns with India's strategic goals, including the capability to monitor enemy submarines in the Indo-Pacific region and to track adversarial infrastructure development along land and maritime borders.

Adding to the mission's capabilities, India recently signed a letter of intent with France for the joint construction and launch of military satellites. The country's defense strategy will also be reinforced by the acquisition of 31 Predator drones from U.S.-based General Atomics, known for their advanced surveillance and combat capabilities.
