March 13, 2025: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the concerns of polytechnic lecturers who have been protesting over job security. During the recent budget session, lecturers claimed that they had lost their jobs due to a court order and, having now exceeded the age limit for lecturer recruitment exams, urged the government to intervene.
Speaking at a press conference, the Chief Minister clarified that the issue had gone to court, which initially ruled that contractual lecturers could not be removed. However, the court later stated that contractual employees could not be regularized as permanent staff, leaving many lecturers in uncertainty.
To address the situation, the state government has decided to set up three new polytechnic institutes in Hajo and Tingkhong, where recruitment will be conducted through a merit-based examination. In consideration of the affected lecturers, the government is also exploring age relaxation for experienced candidates.
Furthermore, the government has assured that efforts will be made to accommodate displaced lecturers in the new institutes, ensuring they do not lose their jobs entirely.
This announcement is expected to bring some clarity and relief to polytechnic lecturers and aspiring candidates in Assam’s technical education sector.
