Six of the seven players from Northeast who would be representing India in different sports, are women

July 13, 2021: As the 126 strong Indian contingent for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 leaves for the global sporting event, we take a look at the seven sportspersons from Northeast who is part of the Indian squad. Interesting to note that six of these seven players are women.



 



1.            MC Mary Kom, Boxing (Manipur)



•             Only female to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship 6 times



•             Only boxer to win 8 World Championship medals



•             Only boxer to have qualified and won Bronze at the 2012 Summer Olympics



•             First Indian female boxer to win Gold in the 2014 Asian Games.



•             First Indian female boxer to win Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games



•             Nicknamed Magnificent Mary, she is Rajya Sabha MP



 



 



2.            Sushila Likmabam, Judo (Manipur)



•             Won Silver at the 2014 Glasglow Commonwealth Games



 



3.            Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, Weightlifting (Manipur) 



•             Won Silver at the 2014 Glasglow Commonwealth Games



•             Won Gold at the 2017 World Weightlifting Champisonships



•             Won Gold at the 2018 Glasglow Commonwealth Games

4.            Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu, Hockey (Manipur)



•             Led Indian hockey team at Rio Olympics



•             Led the junior women's team to a Bronze medal finish at the Women’s Hockey Junior World Cup 2013



•             Was part of the Indian Hockey team that won Bronze at the 2014 Asian Games



 



 



5.            Shanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma, Hockey (Manipur)



•             Was part of the Indian squad that won the 2016 Men’s Hockey Junior World Cup



 



6.            Lalremsiami, Hockey (Mizoram)



•             21 years old



•             First woman player from Mizoram to make it to Olympics



 



 



7.            Lovelina Borgohain, Boxing (Assam)



•             First woman boxer from Assam to qualify for Olympics



•             Won Gold at 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament, New Delhi



•             Won Silver at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament, Guwahati Won Bronze at the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships, New Delhi



•             Won Bronze at 2019 Women’s World Boxing Championships in Russia
