Guwahati: A child was rescued from Arunachal Pradesh after allegedly being sold by their maternal uncle in Udalguri district of Assam.

According to reports, Gyan Bahadur Bhugal took advantage of the child's vulnerable situation, following the death of their father and their mother's physical limitations and sold (allegedly) them for Rs. 50,000.

Fortunately, the Udalguri Child Helpline sprang into action after receiving information about the incident, and with the help of the police, rescued the child from Arunachal and handed them over to the Shishu Kalyan Samiti on Thursday.

This incident is part of a larger problem, as Udalguri district has reportedly several cases of child trafficking, child marriage, and other child crimes in the past. The Child Helpline has registered a staggering 142 cases of child crimes in the district over the past year.

Officials said the district child protection unit is working to address these issues, but the problem persists. Experts point to poverty and ignorance as major factors contributing to child trafficking in the region. A campaign against human trafficking was launched in Udalguri to combat this issue.
