August 12, 2024 The ongoing unrest at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata took a sharp turn on Monday when Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the college's principal, submitted his resignation. This is happening as the striking junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate trainees demand a magistrate's investigation into the horrifying rape and death of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor at the facility. Today marks the fourth day of the strike.
Following the horrific event, Ghosh has been accused of victim blaming, but he has denied saying anything to that effect. "Students are stirring up trouble in order to get rid of me. I'm in favor of punishing the accused. Someone is slandering me. He said to the media this morning, "I have not made such remarks. "My daughter and the deceased girl were similar. In addition, I am a parent. I'm quitting my job as a parent," he declared.
Following the discovery of the trainee doctor's lifeless body in the college seminar hall, a call for accountability sparked the protest, which has seriously disrupted medical services. Later autopsy reports revealed that she had been sexually assaulted prior to her murder, a crime that shocked people in West Bengal and beyond. The main focus of the protests has been calls for Dr. Ghosh's resignation, with medical experts and students claiming that the administration did not take adequate precautions to protect its employees.
A community volunteer was apprehended on August 10 as a result of the police investigation into the crime. While the investigation is ongoing, the accused has been remanded to 14 days of police custody.
An intern physician, two first-year postgraduate students from the department of chest medicine, and a housekeeping employee are the four people connected to the case that Kolkata Police's detective department plans to question in a major development. When the trainee doctor's semi-naked body was found on August 9, these people were on duty that night. Some of them had eaten dinner with the victim a few hours prior to the tragic event, according to police sources.
Due to the case, medical professionals and students from all over the state have taken to the streets in protest, calling for strict punishment for the perpetrators as well as justice for the victim. The principal's resignation broadens the scope of the current crisis and heightens demands for safety and accountability changes within medical institutions.
