July 20, 2024: The Mumbai centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall in the city. Over the past 24 hours, Mumbai’s island city recorded an average rainfall of 78 mm, while eastern and western Mumbai recorded 57 mm and 67 mm, respectively, according to a civic official. Due to waterlogging, traffic has been diverted on the road near Sheetal Cinema and Kale Marg in Kurla. Similarly, traffic on the Aarey route in Goregaon East has been redirected via Seepz-Marol Maroshi-JVLR in both directions, as per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials. Despite the disruptions, train services continue to operate normally. One Killed, Three Injured in Balcony Collapse. Tragedy struck amid the heavy rains when a balcony of the Rubinissa Manzil residential building in Grant Road collapsed. One person was killed, and three others were injured in the incident. Dr. Rashmee from Bhatia Hospital confirmed that four people were brought to the hospital, with one woman declared dead on arrival. The other three injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment.



 



The collapse occurred at around 11 a.m., affecting parts of the ground plus fourth floor of the MHADA’s cessed residential building. The BMC Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) reported the incident at 11:28 a.m. and classified it as a Level I emergency. Prior to the monsoon, the building had been declared cessed and dangerous by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), which had issued notices to residents to vacate. Rescue operations are ongoing, with 7 to 8 residents stranded on the fourth floor. Heavy Rainfall Predicted for Nagpur and Vidarbha Region .The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall with the possibility of extremely heavy showers at isolated places in Nagpur and other districts of the Vidarbha region over the next two days. A red alert has been issued for Chandrapur, and an orange alert for Nagpur, Amravati, and Wardha districts for Saturday.Nagpur, Maharashtra’s second capital, has been experiencing heavy showers since Friday. The Nagpur airport observatory recorded 90.6 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Due to the downpour, the Nagpur district collector has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the city and rural areas.



Incessant rains have led to waterlogging in several areas of Nagpur city, and two bridges in rural parts of the district have been submerged. The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Nagpur has issued a moderate flash flood warning for several watersheds and neighborhoods in Amravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, and Nagpur districts, valid for the next few hours. Residents are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary to ensure their safety during these severe weather conditions.
