RG Kar Rape-Murder: Civic Volunteer Found Guilty, Victim's Father Overcome with Emotion in Court

January 18, 2025: In a landmark ruling, the CBI court on Saturday convicted Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, for the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident, which took place on August 9, 2024, sparked national outrage and protests.

Roy, who was arrested the day after the crime, faced charges of rape and murder. After reviewing all the evidence and witness testimony, the judge declared him guilty. "I have examined all the evidence and witnesses, and after considering all arguments, I find you guilty. You are guilty and must be punished," the judge stated. The court will announce the sentencing on Monday.

During the hearing, Roy denied the charges, claiming he was framed. He questioned the release of certain individuals, including the former SHO of the local police station and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, who were accused of tampering with evidence. "I always wear a rudraksha chain. If I had committed the crime, my chain would have been broken at the scene. I was framed. Those who framed me, including one IPS officer, are being released. Why?" Roy argued.

The judge assured Roy that his arguments would be heard on Monday before proceeding with his judicial custody. Roy has been charged under Section 64 (rape), Section 66 (causing death), and Section 103 (murder). Section 66 carries a maximum sentence of death, while Section 64 allows for life imprisonment.

In a tearful moment, the victim's father, overwhelmed by emotion, broke down in the courtroom upon hearing the verdict. "I kept full faith in you. Thank you for honoring our trust," he said, expressing his gratitude for the justice delivered in his daughter’s case.

The court will deliver the final sentence on Monday, as the nation watches closely, hoping for a verdict that brings true justice to the victim and her grieving family.
