Congress National Conference Forge Historic Pre-Poll Alliance for Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections

AUGUST 23, 2024 - The Congress and National Conference (NC) have officially announced a pre-poll alliance for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, marking their first collaboration since 1987. The alliance was finalized following a crucial meeting between senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Farooq Abdullah, at the Abdullah residence in Srinagar. While challenges in seat-sharing persist, the leadership of both parties remains committed to contesting all 90 seats together, with the alliance agreement expected to be signed soon.

The meeting emphasized the shared goals of both parties, particularly the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood, which remains central to their campaign. Rahul Gandhi, during his visit, reiterated his commitment to returning full statehood to the region and empowering its people. NC patron Farooq Abdullah echoed these sentiments, highlighting the alliance's objective to address the hardships faced by the people over the last decade and combat divisive forces in the state.

Despite ongoing negotiations and difficulties in reaching a seat-sharing formula, both parties are determined to move forward united. Omar Abdullah acknowledged the challenges posed by seat-sharing but expressed optimism about the alliance's future. With assembly elections scheduled to take place in September and October, the alliance's success could play a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir post-Article 370 abrogation.
