Guwahati: The Meghalaya police have apprehended Laden Ch Sangma, alias Chenang, a former Area Commander of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) Northern Zone, 14 years after he allegedly murdered a school teacher.
On July 19, 2012, Chenang led a group of armed GNLA militants to the residence of Denybirth Momin, a respected science and mathematics teacher at Resubelpara Higher Secondary School, in Resu Mepan Abri village. The militants brutally killed Momin outside his home, accusing him of being a police informer.
The crime scene investigation yielded four empty AK ammunition casings, two empty 9mm casings, and a letter on GNLA letterhead claiming responsibility for the killing. A case was registered at Mendipathar Police Station in North Garo Hills, but the investigation faced significant challenges due to a lack of evidence and witnesses' fear of coming forward.
After years of persistent investigation, authorities gathered sufficient evidence to arrest Sangma. He was apprehended in Baghmara on March 27, 2025, by a police team from North Garo Hills. During interrogation, Sangma revealed that he was part of the first batch of GNLA militants and had received training in the Durama Hills of Garo Hills.
Sangma's involvement with the GNLA began after he met Sohan D Shira, the founder of the GNLA, during one of his business trips selling traditional A'chik items. Over time, he developed an acquaintance with Shira, which ultimately led to his involvement in the militant organization.
