February 11, 2025: In preparation for the upcoming Maghi Purnima Snan on Wednesday, February 12, authorities have declared the entire Maha Kumbh area a ‘No Vehicle Zone’ starting from 4 AM on February 11. The move comes after thousands of devotees were stranded in traffic jams extending up to 300 kilometers on Monday, with some stuck for over 30 hours.
The Uttar Pradesh police were seen advising devotees to turn back if possible, highlighting the severity of the congestion. Addressing the situation, Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar stated that the delays were not due to mismanagement but rather the sheer volume of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh, which is witnessing one of the largest human congregations in history. Since the grand religious gathering commenced on January 13, over 40 crore devotees have already taken a holy dip at the Sangam, with millions still pouring in daily.
To ensure a smoother experience for pilgrims on Maghi Purnima, authorities have planned extensive traffic regulations. The ‘No Vehicle Zone’ will be enforced in the mela area from 4 AM on February 11, while Prayagraj city will also come under similar restrictions from 5 PM the same day. Only essential and emergency service vehicles will be exempted from these restrictions.
Additionally, vehicles carrying devotees will be required to park at designated lots along their respective routes, ensuring minimal congestion near the pilgrimage site. These measures will remain in effect until the successful departure of devotees from the Mela area post Maghi Purnima Snan on February 12. The restrictions will also apply to the movement of ‘Kalpvasi’ vehicles within the city and the Maha Kumbh area.
With millions expected to take part in the holy dip, authorities urge pilgrims to plan their journeys accordingly and cooperate with the traffic management measures to avoid inconvenience.
