The former prime minister, renowned for his transformative contributions to India's economy and politics, breathed his last at 9:51 PM on December 26, following a sudden health emergency.

Born in Punjab in 1932, Dr. Singh's illustrious career began as an economic advisor in the commerce ministry in 1971. He went on to serve as India’s prime minister from 2004 to 2014, leading the country through a period of economic growth and global recognition. Earlier this year, he retired from the Rajya Sabha, concluding a remarkable 33-year tenure in the Upper House of Parliament.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, describing Dr. Singh as "one of India’s most distinguished leaders." PM Modi paid tribute to his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a global icon in economics and governance, emphasizing his wisdom and humility. Alongside Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the prime minister visited Dr. Singh’s residence to pay their final respects.

Opposition leaders also shared heartfelt condolences. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi called Dr. Singh his "mentor and guide" in a poignant post on X, noting that millions will remember him with pride. Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Mallikarjun Kharge joined the nation in mourning the former PM's passing.

International leaders, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, sent their tributes, underscoring Dr. Singh's influence on the global stage.

Dr. Singh's last rites will be performed on Saturday, December 28, 2024, with a state funeral in Delhi. The government has declared a seven-day mourning period, during which the national flag will fly at half-mast, and all official functions will be suspended as a mark of respect.

India bids farewell to a leader whose intellect, humility, and vision shaped the nation’s history and inspired generations.
