June 12, 2024 — The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is set to commence on June 24 and will conclude on July 3, as announced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. The announcement was made via a post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).



The session will mark the beginning of a new parliamentary term, with newly elected members taking their oaths or affirming their membership. The session's agenda includes the election of the Speaker of the House and an address by President Droupadi Murmu to a joint sitting of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on June 27. In her address, President Murmu is expected to outline the new government's roadmap for the next five years.



Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to introduce his council of ministers following the President's address. A debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address will follow, during which the INDIA bloc opposition is expected to challenge the NDA government on various issues. Prime Minister Modi will respond to this debate in both Houses of Parliament.



Additionally, Rijiju noted that the 264th session of the Rajya Sabha will start on June 27 and conclude on July 3, coinciding with the Lok Sabha's schedule.



Reflecting on the previous term, the 17th Lok Sabha, also known as the Budget Session, took place from January 31 to February 10. The Lok Sabha held 274 sittings, during which 202 Bills were introduced and 222 were passed. The Rajya Sabha had 271 sittings, with 31 Bills introduced and 220 passed. In total, 221 Bills were turned into Acts during the 17th Lok Sabha term.
