Bengal Bandh partially affected in Kolkata, BJP leaders detained

August 28, 2024: The BJP called for a statewide 12-hours bandh on August 28, to protest against the police action on agitators who took part in the march to the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.



Around 200 people were arrested and several injured in several parts of Kolkata city after police cracked down on protesters attempting to proceed towards the state secretariat. The rally was organised by the new student body, ‘Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj’.



The bandh partially affected in Kolkata, a lesser number of buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis were seen plying on the roads even though markets and shops remained open. Heavy police deployment was seen on the streets.



Seven BJP workers were detained after they were forcefully trying to shut the gates of Shymbazar metro station in Kolkata.
