December 23, 2024: Two shocking incidents of moral policing took place on Sunday in Silchar, leaving the entire district in disbelief and raising concerns over mob justice. The incidents involved a Manipur police officer attacked by a mob on suspicion of being an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant, and a mentally unstable man brutally beaten by a crowd who falsely accused him of child abduction.
The first incident occurred in front of the statue of Swami Vivekananda at Chadarghat, where Qayyum Ahmed Khan, a policeman from Imphal in Manipur, was viciously attacked. Khan had arrived in Silchar for work when he was accosted by a group of 7-8 people who wrongly accused him of being a Bangladeshi infiltrator. Before Khan could react, the mob began assaulting him. Despite the presence of an on-duty traffic police officer who attempted to intervene, the mob overpowered the officer and continued the attack. Only after local police were informed about the situation did they intervene, rescuing Khan from the attackers and escorting him to the police station for his safety.
In a separate incident, a mentally unstable man became the target of a mob, who accused him of attempting to abduct children. The man was tied to a bridge and subjected to a brutal beating. Upon receiving reports of the attack, the police arrived at the scene, rescued the victim, and rushed him to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Both incidents quickly went viral on social media, causing outrage and widespread condemnation. Many have expressed concern over the growing prevalence of mob violence and vigilantism, as well as the failure of local authorities to prevent such attacks. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to either incident, and investigations are ongoing.
The events have raised serious questions about the state of law and order in the district and the increasing trend of mob justice, as local police continue to investigate the perpetrators of these horrific acts.
