Guwahati: Senior journalist Dilwar Hussain Mojumder has been granted bail after being arrested twice within a span of 48 hours.
Mojumder, a senior journalist working for a digital news outlet and also the Assistant General Secretary of the Guwahati Press Club, was initially arrested on Tuesday midnight and later released on bail.
However, in a shocking move, he was rearrested on Thursday evening in connection with a separate case, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from journalist communities and civil society groups.
Mojumder's lawyer argued that the second arrest was a clear attempt to harass and intimidate the journalist, who had been reporting on sensitive issues.
Despite securing bail, procedural delays mean Mojumder will remain in judicial custody overnight at Guwahati Central Jail, with his release anticipated tomorrow, Saturday, March 29, after the completion of formalities.
On Wednesday, March 26, the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court granted him bail in this first case after the police failed to substantiate their claims with strong evidence.
However, just as his release seemed imminent, Mojumder was rearrested on Thursday evening, March 27, in connection with a second case.
The second FIR (Case No 111/25) accused Mojumder of trespassing into the bank’s premises and attempting to steal valuable documents during the protest, charges that carry multiple sections of the BNS, including some non-bailable offences.
