Ukraine launches massive drone attack on Moscow, one of the largest in history targeting the Russian capital

August 21, 2024: The mayor of Moscow stated that Ukraine conducted a massive drone attack on the city, leading to Russian air defence units destroying 11 drones heading towards the capital. Ukraine's aggressive incursion into Russia includes troops targeting important bridges in the western region, while Moscow's mayor accused Kyiv of trying to launch a significant drone attack on the capital.

Ever since the Ukrainian invasion started almost a fortnight ago, their troops have been gradually advancing in Kursk and demolishing important bridges to hamper Moscow's ability to transport goods and to disturb the routes for supplies. Last week, two bridges over the Seym River in Kursk were disabled. Ukraine stated they employed precise airstrikes for one, while Russia alleged that Kyiv used Western missiles for the other. The assault occurs as Russia is facing difficulty in ejecting Ukrainian troops from its Kursk area, while also making progress in eastern Ukraine after the massive invasion of Russia in World War Two.

Sobyanin stated that based on initial reports, there were no injuries or damage mentioned following the attacks. Recent months have seen Ukraine frequently sending out one or two drones towards Moscow, resulting in minimal harm. The attack on Wednesday appears to be bigger than the May 2023 attack, in which President Vladimir Putin claimed Kyiv was trying to intimidate and provoke Russia by destroying at least eight drones over the capital. Russian officials seldom reveal the complete scale of the attacks, only mentioning drones that are taken down by their air defence teams. Neither Ukraine nor Russia often reveal the complete extent of the harm caused by their attacks, except when there is damage to residential or civilian infrastructure, or civilian casualties occur.

Governor Alexander Bogomaz reported on Telegram that there were no injuries or destruction following the attack near the Bryansk border in southwest Russia .The RIA state news agency of Russia also stated that two drones were taken down above the Tula region, located next to the northern border of the Moscow region.
