Tesla Moves Closer to India Entry with Fresh Job Listings After PM Modi-Musk Meeting

February 18, 2025: In a significant move towards entering the Indian market, Tesla Inc. has posted job openings in India, signaling its preparations for expansion. The hiring activity follows a recent meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States.

According to a Bloomberg report, Tesla has listed 13 job vacancies on its LinkedIn page, covering roles in Mumbai and Delhi. The positions include service technicians, customer engagement managers, advisory roles, and delivery operations specialists.

Tesla’s interest in the Indian market has been long-standing, but high import duties previously hindered its entry. However, the Indian government recently reduced the basic customs duty on luxury EVs priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%, making it a more viable market for global automakers like Tesla.

India’s EV sector is still in its early stages compared to China, but with growing government incentives and a push for cleaner energy solutions, Tesla sees an opportunity for expansion. While EV sales in India reached nearly 100,000 units last year, the figure remains small compared to China’s 11 million EVs sold in the same period.

Tesla’s hiring spree suggests an initial focus on importing vehicles before considering local manufacturing, depending on demand and policy support. The Indian government is also encouraging global carmakers to invest in domestic EV production, offering incentives to those willing to set up manufacturing units in the country.

Although there is no official confirmation on Tesla’s launch timeline in India, the latest developments indicate that the EV giant is actively gearing up for its much-anticipated entry into one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets.
