November 18, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday for the 19th G20 Summit, marking the second leg of his three-nation visit. His arrival in Brazil follows a successful and "productive" trip to Nigeria, where he held bilateral talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and engaged with the Indian community there.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the arrival on social media, posting images of PM Modi's warm welcome at the Rio de Janeiro airport. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi lands in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 Brazil Summit," the MEA wrote, sharing a glimpse of the prime minister's arrival.
In his own message, PM Modi expressed enthusiasm for the summit, stating on his official X handle, “Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to take part in the G20 Summit. I look forward to the summit deliberations and fruitful talks with various world leaders.”
India’s participation in the G20 Troika—alongside Brazil and South Africa—gives Prime Minister Modi a significant role in shaping discussions at the summit, which will take place on November 18-19. High-profile leaders joining Modi in Rio include Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden.
During the summit, global leaders will focus on pressing issues such as sustainable development, economic recovery, and climate change. The summit in Brazil follows India's successful G20 presidency, where Modi played a key role in shaping the agenda and global cooperation.
After attending the G20 Summit, PM Modi will proceed to Guyana on November 19 for the final leg of his trip. This visit to Guyana will be historic, as it marks the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the country in over five decades. Modi is expected to meet with Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and discuss strengthening bilateral ties between India and the Caribbean nation.
