March 29, 2023: The Kangra tea of India gets Geographical Indication (GI) tag from European Commission on Wednesday.

Kangra tea is a tea from the Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, India. Both black tea and green tea have been produced in the Kangra Valley.

Tea was first grown in the Kangra region in the mid-19th century. After a survey in 1848 which showed the area is suitable for tea plantation, Camellia sinensis (Chinese variety) was planted across the region. Later, the production turned out to be successful in Palampur and Dharamshala.

EU Agriculture tweeted, "Today we registered a new Geographical Indication from India! #Kangra tea is grown 900-1,400 meters above sea level, on the slopes of the Dhauladhar mountain range in the Western Himalayas. It has a nutty, woody aroma and a sweet aftertaste."
